EXCURSIONS
Our excursion office organises weekly outings at the discovery of the most spectacular towns inland and along the coast. A good chance to explore the natural beauty, traditions and culture of the area.
Tropea, Capo Vaticano and Pizzo (full day with packed lunch)
We visit the old centre of Tropea and the Norman Cathedral, and admire the Church of Santa Maria dell’Isola from the terrace overlooking the sea. From here you can see the Aeolian Islands. We continue to Capo Vaticano, visit the famous Lighthouse and, in the afternoon, make our way to Pizzo where we wander the narrow streets and squares of the old town. We visit the little church of Piedigrotta, carved entirely into the tufa rock of a cliff overhanging the sea, and the Aragonese castle where Gioacchino Murat was sentenced to death by firing squad. We then stop to taste the famous Pizzo Truffle.
The Aeolian Islands (full day with packed lunch)
Mini-cruise to the Aeolian Islands taking in the natural beauty of caves, bays and cliffs sculpted by nature. The mini-cruise will include: Stromboli, one of the most active volcanoes, Lipari with its characteristic Aeolian-style houses, and Lipari. We also sail to Vulcano, the island where sulfur from the volcanic rock is used to make mud with great healing powers.
Reggio Calabria and Scilla (full day with packed lunch)
Departure for Scilla and visit to the enchanting fishing village of Chianalea, the Castle of Ruffo, and the church of San Rocco. Then on to Reggio Calabria, an elegant city in Art Nouveau style with a fine collection of finds from Magna Graecia, such as the Riace Bronzes. Pleasant walk to the beautiful promenade, and a visit to the Roman Baths, the Greek walls and the Duomo.
Zugri and tasting of typical products (half day)
At the discovery of the Calabrian countryside. Its historic centre represents a social model of peasant life. Visit to the Zungri Caves and the Church of Our Lady of the Snow. Visit to a farm that produces onions, Nduja, wine, cheeses and vegetables, with tasting.
Stromboli by night (departure after lunch and return at midnight)
Da Tropea si raggiunge Stromboli e si vede la Sciara del Fuoco, lingua di terra dove scorre la lava. Passeggiata e visita alla chiesa di San Vincenzo Ferrari.
Gerace and Locri (full day)
Visit to Gerace, the town of a hundred churches. Visit to the Norman cathedral, the largest in Calabria. We then go to an ancient city founded by the Greeks, 3 km outside Locri, where there are important archaeological finds and the ruins of temples, a city wall and theatre.
Coast to Coast (half day)
A 3-hour boat ride along the Costa degli Dei, from Tropea to Capo Vaticano, with a stop at the characteristic bays and opportunities for snorkelling.
